Fine Pet Portraits - an artist's blog

My name is Sandra Palme, I am a professional pet portrait artist based in the UK. I draw your dog, cat horse or any other pet in pastels, charcoal, coloured pencils or graphite. It is my goal to capture the pet's personality and essence as well as their looks. I know how much your pet means to you as I feel the same about mine! I have finished the cat portrait and 'Chini's' owners are thrilled with the result. I really enjoyed drawing this beautiful British Shorthair cat!

Cat portrait in pastels

I have just started a new cat portrait commission. British Shorthair cat 'Chini' will be drawn in pastels on velour paper. The reference photo will be fun to work from - I love the pose!

New cat pastel started

After spending most of the day sorting out website problems, I have finally managed to take a photo of the latest cat commission's pencil outline. It is a rather unusual pose and I'm looking forward to working on this one. 'Huepo', a German cat that ran away from home a few years ago and has not been seen since, will be drawn in pastels.

Cat pastel finished

The pastel portrait of 'Felix' the cat is now finished. The client asked for a blue/green blackground because Felix' blanket was blue and green. I am very happy with the portrait and hope it does the cat justice. On to the next cat portrait then! ;o)

Cat portrait progress

We went to Marwell Zoo near Winchester yesterday and I took about 250 photos that I might use as future reference photos. I love the meerkats in particular and am planning a series of meerkat sketches. Another thing on my 'to do list' which is getting longer and longer all the time... LOL
Commissions come first though! So today I've made some progress on the portrait of Felix the cat. Here's a scan:

New cat portrait in pastels

This is the pencil outline of a new cat portrait. 'Felix' will be drawn in pastels. Sadly, he was run over by a car and killed at only 2 years old. His owner has also commissioned another portrait - a pastel of a cat that ran away a while ago and has not been seen since. So these will be very special portraits...

Boris the cat

What's the weather like where you are? A few days ago it was still winter, now we seem to be in the middle of summer. Phew! Despite the heat (well I mean we're in England so this IS 'hot'), I have been busy. Just finished the full body pastel of Boris the cat. I've also started two more horse portraits... but I'll tell you about those tomorrow.

Cat portrait in graphite pencil

This one of several cat portrait commissions I've got lined up - 'Al Capone', a Chartreux / British Shorthair cat. He is 11 years of age and will be drawn in graphite pencils (head study) and pastels (full body).
This is the graphite portrait (work in progress):

New horse portrait - Welsh Cob gelding

While I can't show you the cat portrait I am currently working on (it's a present to the client's colleague), I can post a scan of a new horse portrait that I started drawing a couple of days ago. It's a three year-old dark bay Welsh Cob gelding called 'Ijsbrand'. He is being drawn in pastels and this is how far I've got:
