Fine Pet Portraits - an artist's blog

My name is Sandra Palme, I am a professional pet portrait artist based in the UK. I draw your dog, cat horse or any other pet in pastels, charcoal, coloured pencils or graphite. It is my goal to capture the pet's personality and essence as well as their looks. I know how much your pet means to you as I feel the same about mine! Shetland pony stallion - pastel portrait

So I have tried the new paper I bought (Sennelier pastelcard) and I do like it! The colours come out great and you are able to smudge the pastel (which is impossible on velour paper). I really enjoyed painting this horse portrait - it shows a Shetland pony stallion. I'll soon use this paper again but first it's back to velour. I'm doing a little project for our local wildlife centre. I'll tell you more about it next time!

Horse portrait in pastels finished

This is one of my latest horse portrait commissions. 'Merrie' is a much-loved German mare, sadly no longer with her owner. I hope my rendition in pastels will bring back some happy memories.

Connemara gelding pastel portrait

I'm still very busy and can't show any progress scans or finished artwork unless the customer is sure it's ok and won't give away any Xmas surprises. I've got one for you to look at!
This is a very special double horse portrait as it actually shows the same Connemara pony gelding. 'San Pedro' - a much loved family pony that sadly passed away last year - was a very dark grey at 4 years old. At 23, he was pure white and I felt that contrasting these two stage of his life would make a great portrait. Here it is - the customer is thrilled with the result.

Horse portrait finished

The second portrait of the pretty Westphalian mare is finished as well and her owners are very happy. So am I - the reference photo was rather poor so I am very pleased with the result. I am sure the two horse portraits will look great next to each other.

Pastel painting update

Finally another update on the Corvette pastel painting. It seems to be taking ages but every inch needs to be 'perfect'. I will get there in the end! :o)

Horse portrait - new scan

We went to Chessington Zoo yesterday and took some great photos. I might draw a tiger soon if I can make some time...and there's still several meerkat portraits that I'd like to do in charcoal. My 'fun portrait' reference photo list is getting longer and longer....
I have made some progress on the second portrait of the pretty Westphalian horse. Her owners are over the moon with portrait 1 so I'm determined to make portrait 2 a success as well! ;o)

Car pastel portrait update

Here's a new scan of the pastel painting of the lovely blue Corvette. It is an entirely new experience and rather different from drawing pets and animals. Every tiny detail needs to be perfect otherwise it looks wrong. A bit of a challenge but I am enjoying it.

Cat pastel pet portrait finished

The pastel painting of Bonnie the cat is now finished. Considering that I had to transplant this pretty cat's head onto another cat's body and then edit it, using the photos of Bonnie that were available, I am very pleased with the result. I hope her owners will be too! :o)

Latest pastel commission - a car!

I am currently working on a rather unusual commission: a pastel portrait of a sports car or, to be precise, a Chevrolet Corvette. I certainly wouldn't mind that kind of car in my drive! ;o)

Basset Hound on velour paper finished!

I've come to a conclusion regarding velour paper.... YES! I LIKE IT! :o) The bright/rich pastel colours come out so well and the texture of the paper adds to the realistic/3-d effect. I will definitely use velour paper again...in fact, I can hardly wait to have another go! :o)
